The city was taking approximately 150 feet of road frontage (the property boundary between a road and the property) for the purpose of installing a driveway farther away from a busy intersection so that cars would not stop to drive into the driveway and back up the intersection (The property was occupied by a tenant – McDonald’s. The ‘taking’ actually benefited the McDonald’s insofar as it provided better driveway access, so the McDonald’s – who leased the land from the landowner on very beneficial terms for the landowner was quite happy to have it happen).

Anyhow, the Oregon Ducks vs North Carolina Tar Heels 2022 Holiday Bowl Helmet to Helmet shirt moreover I love this owner, who was representing himself, was claiming he was unhappy because he was a shrewd landowner and wanted to maximise his compensation (To which I cannot blame him. I would do the same if put in that position. However, my job at the time was to protect the public taxpayers by not overcompensating someone for their land.) When we got to court during the preliminary hearings (motions, etc to lay out the ground rules of any upcoming trial) the landowner filed a motion entitled ‘Stephen Price Is a LIAR’ (all caps included in the heading of the motion 😃). I, of course objected. However, given how the power of eminent domain is lopsided towards the government enacting those powers, the court wanted to do everything in its power to let the landowner vent so, despite my halfhearted objections the motion was heard. During arguments for the motion the landowner provided no witnesses, evidence or even logical reasoning to support his argument that I was a liar. He essentially ranted during an ‘opening statement’ about how much he hated me (which was disappointing to hear, if I am being honest, in that I had gone out of my way to be as considerate and respectful of his position as possible and even helped him along with his appearances at hearings so that whatever point he wanted to be made was heard by the court and put on the record) and therefore I was a big fat liar scumbag.
