In a parallel note, the Skateboarding Skate Hard, Skate Fast, Skate Forever Skate T-Shirt in addition I really love this DSM5 also added what they’re calling “borderline intellectual functioning” for those about 1.5 standard deviations below average, where school might not be an option. We would have just called that “stupid” in colloquial terms, I believe that level at one time in history would have been called “idiot,” a distinct class from the other invalids, such as morons. (If you have to report history, you are repeating it right now)! That makes for an awkward day in psych history class. The writers of the DSM5 agreed in consensus that it would be most advantageous to everyone involved to consider “unusual behavior, holding hands above head…”as being some type of one of those, rather than defining he is the one of those between 70–85 points. A marker of points tested helps me place you in a class in school at the level you’ll be able to perform. Finding out you may be on the spectrum really just says when you translate the scienceese is that you’re kinda weird and different. It’s person-centered, so now we’re centered on the person and this horrible burden, like talking nice about lepers while being horrified to go near them. “With autism” sounds like you have control. I can work to recognize body language and have a better life. “On the spectrum” feels like a condemnation, the mark of Cain. Women will never be President because of their condition. Yes, it’s holistic, you’ve made it the entirety of their being for them.

My preference is to be called Barry, because that’s my name. However, when referring to me in terms of my neurotype, I prefer to be referred to as autistic. Autism is an integral part of what makes me who I am. I suppose that technically I am “on the Skateboarding Skate Hard, Skate Fast, Skate Forever Skate T-Shirt in addition I really love this spectrum”, and I definitely prefer that term to “person with autism”, but I’m not really a fan of either. Frankly, “person on the spectrum,” just sounds clunky and unwieldy to me. We are afraid of judgement. We see the world differently, we notice details other people miss, so the things we talk about can be weird. We struggle to read body language and tone of voice, so we don’t know if we have crossed the line. We tend to convey our thoughts succinctly and accurately, which can offend people who aren’t used to our bluntness. We often don’t use the “correct” tone of voice or mannerisms, so we can offend that way. And we tend to info-dump, which other people don’t like. We also have to consciously learn how to have a conversation. We tend to talk about ourselves and our interests because that’s what we know; it takes practice to figure out how to engage the other person and let them speak about themselves. If someone talks to us about something that happened to them, we will reply with something similar that happened to us. We do this to say “I know, to some extent, what you are going through”. But other people think we are hijacking the conversation. We aren’t. We are expected to just say “that must have been so frustrating!” But that just seems so shallow to us.
